March is National Nutrition Month® and it's a good time for you to review your diet to see if you are eating as well as you should be. Chances are you're not.
A recent article published by CDC researchers confirmed that most Americans are not eating enough fruits and vegetables. While eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables has many health benefits, such as helping to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and obesity, only about 1 in 10 adults consume the recommended amounts. Results showed that consumption was lower among men, young adults, and adults living in poverty.
Manet offers a variety of programs and services to help our patients and community residents have access to nutritional information and resources, as well as to affordable, fresh produce. Manet's professional nutrition staff includes Jacalyn Newman, LDN, LSW, CNS, RDT and Celeste Le, RN, RDN, who provide medical nutrition therapy support for patients with a variety of chronic conditions. They also work with Manet pediatrician Charles Bell, MD to provide a free healthy eating and exercise program for 10- to 14-year- old patients, in collaboration with the South Shore YMCA, and they work with Manet's Care Management staff to disseminate Farmers Market vouchers, donated by Morton and Carney hospitals, to patients with or at high risk for diabetes.
In the community, Manet and the Quincy Weymouth Wellness Initiative offer a variety of free healthy eating and chronic disease management programs for people who live and work in Quincy and Weymouth. Manet's Taunton site hosts regular nutrition workshops in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, a nd Manet is partnering with BMC HealthNet Plan to bring the Fresh Truck to its locations and is a regular "2 dollar a bag" site for local non-profit Fair Foods . See below for more information on these community programs.
