A Patient's Perspective: The Clinic Makes Me Feel at Home
Bill had been to scores of doctors over the years, but never felt quite comfortable or understood. After more than 30 years of working in the asphalt paving business, Bill had developed numerous health problems, including back pain, anxiety, heart disease, glaucoma and arthritis. "My body broke down after working so hard for so many years and I didn’t get proper care,” he said. Depressed and discouraged, Bill wasn't sure where to turn next. Then he heard about Manet Community Health Center. "It's close to where I live, right up the road in Raynham, so I thought I'd give it a try," he said.
During Bill's first meeting with Dr. William Brandon, the lead physician at Manet's Taunton location, Dr. Brandon asked Bill to tell him about himself and what he felt he needed. “He listened and didn’t say a word until I was done," Bill explains. "Then he told me, 'If there is something you need, Bill, I will help you. I promise I will not steer you wrong.' He took me to a place where I feel that he understood me."
Now Bill's health is improving. Dr. Brandon discovered that Bill had diabetes in addition to his other conditions, and they are working together to manage his conditions and medications. Bill was eager to share his experiences with Congressman Kennedy on Tuesday, to highlight the importance of community health centers, saying, “I feel comfortable going to the doctor now. The clinic makes me feel at home.”
